Poongar Red Rice

Poongar is a traditional red rice variety from Tamil Nadu that is popularly known as “Women’s Rice” (Pengalin Arisi) because, traditionally, it has been consumed by women especially after puberty and has been associated with women’s nutritional and reproductive wellness. A review of traditional South Indian rice varieties notes that Poongar was traditionally consumed by women after puberty and was believed to help with ailments associated with the female reproductive system. �
